Course Projects & Field Trips

Exhibition of new works by SACI MFA in Studio Art candidate Jay Dexter

February 12-15, 2018

Opening: Monday, February 12 at 5pm

Behold and hearken his arrival
A marriage of silt and stars, of sky and sea
It is he! It is he!

Consummated with a decadent feast, the confluence of contradictions begins. Sprung from fantasy the Cabbage King is born. Mundanity is crowned in splendour and filth is transformed into gold; so does the cycle continue. Clouds act as a vessel for fantastical thought by superimposing the imagined on the real, on that which is form yet formless.

Opposites are married becoming neither and both { and everything in between }

The inner battle between bestial impulses and the confines of polite society play out through personifications of greed, vanity, suffering, desire, and narcissism. All filtered through the image of the self. This art is a dark mirror of the artist framed with frippery and frill. Enter a monument of monumental ego.

WORK(IN)SPACE is a new series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA Candidates in Studio Art, Photography and Communication Design as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students will work directly with SACI's Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Working in a one-to-one relationship with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students will step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations and needs of the given space to achieve the best final result.

WORK(IN)SPACE will be held in the Maidoff Gallery and will include all phases of the exhibition, from the planning, to the installation and the opening of the solo show. Visitors are invited to attend the opening of the exhibitions, or visit during opening hours.
