Exhibition of new works by SACI MFA in Studio Art candidate Jane Mason
WORK(IN)SPACE: Jane Mason
January 24-26, 2018
Opening: Wednesday, January 24 at 5pm
The legend of the spider lily flower speaks of a “love that cannot be” or of being “unable to meet your love” because of the particular way in which the plant grows: the leaves sprout in the spring and die in the summer before the flowers bloom in autumn in such a way that the leaves and flowers never appear at the same time. While creating these works, the artist engaged with her experiences related to the act of leaving. In life, there is a beginning point followed by a series of ending moments. In her paintings and drawings, Mason expresses the complex emotions associated with leaving -- emptiness, embracing, longing, anger, ignorance, sorrow -- by using diverse compositions and contrasting colors to compare the past and present.
WORK(IN)SPACE is a new series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA Candidates in Studio Art, Photography and Communication Design as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students will work directly with SACI's Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Working in a one-to-one relationship with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students will step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations and needs of the given space to achieve the best final result.
WORK(IN)SPACE will be held in the Maidoff Gallery and will include all phases of the exhibition, from the planning, to the installation and the opening of the solo show. Visitors are invited to attend the opening of the exhibitions, or visit during opening hours.
