WORK(IN)SPACE 2021: "Day-to-Day"
Day-to-Day presents recent works by Joe Cimino that question suburban routines, exploring the mundane activities associated with them. The suburban landscape is riddled with items produced from consumer culture that are left unquestioned as to how or why they came about. How then does this daily infrastructure, led by industrial and capitalist ideals, inform what is overlooked? Cimino is specifically interested in revealing the peripheries of one’s own “Day-to-Day” vison, what is left out, and how these peripheries can influence the full frame.
The exhibition brings together two works, Monochromes and The Midnight Drive, which are in dialog with each other.
Monochromes is a large-scale video installation that addresses the overlooked remnants in suburbia and brings them into the foreground. The series comprises of four video and sound works, that isolate these remnants and slow them down. A fog of color conceals subtle movements within the videos that become hidden and clear overtime, addressing this notion of overlooking what is on the peripherals.
The Midnight Drive is an audio work that utilizes the podcast format to play with the displacement of time, bringing the past and future into an unknown present. It exists only digitally and is graciously hosted online by Radio Papesse, a webradio, archive, and platform devoted to contemporary art and the production and promotion of experimental radio and sound (radiopapesse.org). This work was created with the intent to be listened to on the go and wherever one chooses to experience it.
These works in tandem to each other, aim to explore the subtleties and overlooked parts of life, in one’s own “Day-to-Day” routine.
WORK(IN)SPACE is a series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA in Studio Art candidates, as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students work directly in SACI's Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Each week, a new opening presents a coherent body of work of the artists. Working one-on-one with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations, and needs of the given space to achieve the best final result.
WORK(IN)SPACE is held in SACI’s Maidoff Gallery and includes all phases of the exhibition, from the planning to the installation and opening of the show.
Gallery Hours: from 9:30-4:30 daily (Florence time)
