SACI Alum, Yo-Yo Lin, at the 54th New York Film Fest: October 2016

Yo-Yo Lin and The Family at the 54th New York Film Festival: October 1-2, 2016

Yo-Yo Lin (SACI Alum, Fall 2013), a Taiwanese-American artist from Los Angeles, California, is creating exciting innovations in field of Virtual Reality art. Currently the Artistic Director of The Family,  self-described as “a multi-media collective of storytellers who care,” and “coast to coast art facilitators,”  Yo-Yo partners with Will Cherry, Steve Dabal, Elle Callahan, and Michael Matchen. The collective is making a lasting impression with their work in the newest art technologies. They were invited to take part in Convergence 2016 at the 54th New York Film Festival, where their project Ricerca VR, an installation imported into virtual reality, will be featured as one of the festival’s “immersive experiences that redefine the idea of cinematic storytelling.”

Ricerca VR (Italian for “research”) began shortly after Yo-Yo’s time studying at SACI in Florence, Italy. Originally presented as a large-scale video installation, the now reimagined piece employs virtual reality to extend its life beyond the gallery space. In it, a man scours his memories for something lost, traversing a lush world rendered with a vibrant mix of 2D and stop motion animation, in a search for love, for forgiveness, for meaning. The piece embodies an essential aspect of our humanity.

Ricerca VR is on view in the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center on October 1st and 2nd.

This is not the first time Yo-Yo and The Family have been featured for their work in Virtual Reality. They recently teamed up with HTC to make a Virtual Reality commercial, featuring a piece called The Old House. The project explores ancestry, urbanization, and memories, in which Yo-Yo recreates her father’s old home in Taipei, Taiwan, using VR painting. Her father lives near and visits the house every week—a structure now nestled between two jumbo buildings and an overpass—but the building is now empty and uninhabited. Its memories are what keep it alive, and using VR technology, Yo-Yo is able to “return” and recreate them.

While studying at SACI, Yo-Yo Lin projected her video, Unstable Territories – Faces, at the CCC Strozzina Center of Contemporary Culture and at La Corte Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Florence with SACI’s Digital Multimedia class, taught by Dejan Atanackovic.
