Leonardo DiCaprio purchases painting by SACI Alum Jean-Pierre Roy through Instagram
Ever wonder how social media platforms can directly help to market your work as an artist? Well, during PULSE New York Contemporary Art Fair, a painting by SACI Alum Jean-Pierre Roy (Fall 1994) was snatched up by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor and art collector saw Nachlass (2015) on Instagram and bought the painting over the phone which was on display at the fair with Copenhagen’s Gallery Poulsen. Jean-Pierre Roy, born in Santa Monica, California in 1974, is a Brooklyn-based artist. Jean-Pierre studied at Studio Art Centers International in 1994, received his BFA from Loyola Marymount University (1996), and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art (2002) where was awarded a one-year fellowship from the school. Since 2003, Jean-Pierre has had five solo exhibitions in New York and abroad. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the US and Europe and has had solo museum exhibitions at the Torrence Museum of Art in Los Angeles and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, New American Painters, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Stranger, Hi-Fructose and many other publications. He is the co-creator of Single Fare, an annual NYC art event that has been covered by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal. His work is in the collections of Anita Zabludowicz, Jereann Cheney, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Jean Pigozzi, Leonardo DiCaprio and Bjorn Borg, among others. He currently teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art.
Update: Later in the year, in the October issue (V. 37) of Hi-Fructose Magazine, Jean-Pierre’s work was featured on the cover and in an extensive article about his career as an artist, including his formative experience studying at SACI (p. 84-95).
January 19-March 6, 2016, Jean-Pierre is part of a group exhibition Now and Then: Drawings from the 19th Century to the Present at the New York Academy of Art.
