Field Trip to Bologna

This field trip is dedicated to the viewing of artworks by female artists presented in lectures during the term. Details to be announced.  Bologna, where Europe’s first university is located – still an important educational institution today – has a particularly rich history in terms of fostering female artists, the first of which was a nun: Suor Caterina Vigri; most Bolognese women artists were instead the daughters of prominent painters, from Lavinia Fontana to Elisabetta Sirani. In addition to painters, Bologna boasts the first and only known female sculptor of the Renaissance: Properzia de’ Rossi, a controversial personality whose personal history also includes brushes with the law.
