ARTS(PC-2)400 Conservation II, Roberta Lapucci, Alice Parri, Spring 2019

(Minimum of 77 hours: 30 lecture hours and 47 practice hours)

The class is divided into three sections:
A) Practical experience on a single artwork per person
B) Science related to conservation: lectures by R. Lapucci
C) Predisposition of all the materials to illustrate the Conservation Department activity 2018-2019 at the SACI End-of-Term Show

The practical section is focused on different conservation processes related to the student’s preferred field of interest (painting, wood, ceramics, metals) or to his or her thesis topic. (50 hours).

Each student will be responsible for his or her own individual project, even if group (team) work on some processes is strongly recommended.

Chemistry and Physics for Conservation (20 hours)

For the science section students are required to complete two exercises; one written, one oral.

Before midterm:
Written exercise: Choose one substance that you use in your restoration intervention and make a technical card. It must (as a minimum) describe:

a) Chemical and common names and formulas of the product used (and producer)
b) Chemical and physical characteristics, such as: boiling point, solubility, miscibility, volatility, capillarity
c) Origin and manufacturing processes: where you can find it in nature or how you can produce it by chemical synthesis.
d) Possible uses
e) Specific use in your conservation intervention (example: as a solvent to remove)
f) Toxicity

After midterm:
A 20 minute oral presentation: Each student will be required to present to the class a critical discussion of an article concerning scientific issues related to artworks. The article must be approved by the instructor or the TA. There will be two student presentations per week. Please schedule a time for your presentation in advance.

This section is a practical/theoretical debate aimed at discussing how to evaluate and show our restoration intervention for the SACI End-of-Term Show.

The final materials to be produced for class are:

A) A report with critical discussion of the intervention performed, including photo documentation and graphics, bibliographical references and a list of the materials used (with name of producers, percentages, etc.).

B) A Chemical Card and an oral presentation of an article

C) An illustrative panel and power point slides on the topics chosen related to the intervention performed (the best panels will be shown at the end-of-term SACI show).

Graduate Students
​Students in MFA, MA, and Post-Bac programs are expected to complete additional assignments and to produce work at a level appropriate for students in a graduate program. They are graded accordingly and, if they successfully complete all course requirements for graduate students, receive graduate-level credit for the course.

First-Aid Kits in the Painting Conservation Studios
There are two sets of first-aid kits in the painting conservation studios.  Green and orange first-aid kits are in both the room adjacent to the main studio and the room next to the diagnostic area.  The green first-aid kit is for eye injuries.  It contains a solution for application to the eyes, eye patches, a plastic container, and scissors.  The orange first-aid kit is for other injuries.  It contains disinfectant, band aids, sterile pads (2 sets of different sizes), adhesive tape, scissors, cotton, tweezers, sterile gloves, liquid solution for cleaning wounds, a latex tourniquet, and first-aid instructions.
