SACI is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Dean of Art & Design, Leo Rowland.
Leo will begin in his new role as Dean of SACI on March 25, 2019. He has extensive experience in international education, and has worked for nearly four years as Director of Study Abroad at the University of Redlands, engaging directly with all campus offices related to study abroad and international education: Student Life, Campus Diversity and Inclusion, Registrar, Admissions, etc. Leo has also been involved with IES Abroad in various capacities since 2013, including serving as Academic Director at the IES Buenos Aires Center for two years. As Academic Director, Leo’s responsibilities included curriculum and program development, quality assessment and service learning/internship programs that entailed relationships with over 20 local organizations. During the decade he spent in Argentina, Leo also worked in various faculty and administrative roles (especially related to academic affairs, international programs, and study abroad) at the National University of San Martin/Lincoln University College in Buenos Aires.
Leo’s involvement with IES in recent years included the Annual Conference Planning Committee in 2017 and the Faculty Awards Committee in 2016 and 2017. He also served as chairman of the IES Amsterdam Center Assessment Committee in 2018. Recently, Leo has additionally been involved with the Forum on Education Abroad - as a member of the Forum’s Curriculum Toolbox Working Group in 2015/16 and the Advocacy Committee in 2017. He is currently on the Forum’s 2019 Annual Conference Planning Committee, chairs the Forum’s International Working Group and is an elected member of the Forum Council. Leo is also a member of the Academic Working Group of the Overseas Advisory Council (OSAC).
During his career, Leo has worked as a translator, and has edited and abridged over 40 fiction and non-fiction books for Time Warner Books and Hachette Books USA. He has also been a reporter for a daily newspaper in Vermont and received national awards for numerous articles he has written.
Born in Buenos Aires and raised in London and Seoul, Leo received his BA in political science from Brown University and his MFA in creative writing from California State University, Fresno.
