Molly Di Grazia: Pharmakon

September 12 - October 15, 2017

Opening: Tuesday, September 12 at 6pm

Pharmakon by Molly Di Grazia (SACI MFA in Studio Art 2015) will open the fall exhibition season at SACI's Maidoff Gallery on September 12, 2017.

In the Greek language, a pharmakon can be described as a “drug, poison, medicine, potion, remedy, spell, or cure.” This enigmatic range presents a paradox of both negative and positive meaning, a set of indeterminate opposites. Her installation explores this shifting duality, centered around a question: what helps us vs. what harms us? Di Grazia regularly uses repetition in her work as a way to navigate a balance between calmness and compulsion in our daily rituals - a constant contemporary struggle between self-preservation and fatigue/burnout in a relentless society.

Though she's hard at work preparing for her exhibition, Molly was kind enough to give us a sneak peek of some of the pieces she's working on for Pharmakon and update us on her life in Italy after earning her MFA at SACI in 2015. After participating in several residencies and workshops to broaden her practice, she has continued to work across a vast range of materials and media. She explains, "My art becomes influenced by the environments I find myself in, and I am always curious about the story of a place, its people, their traditions...All of this information gets filed away somewhere in my mind and then usually reappears suddenly out of this weird index I have learned to simply trust as I go along."

Don't miss the opening reception of Pharmakon on September 12 at 6pm for your chance to see the completed works and talk to the artist about her practice.

Molly Di Grazia is an artist living and working in Pietrasanta, Italy. Born in 1984 in San Francisco, she moved to New York City in 2002 where she completed a B.A. in Writing at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School. After graduating, she continued her visual/literary practice while working at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in gallery education and accessibility programming before relocating to Italy in 2013 to obtain her MFA in Studio Art (Painting) from Studio Arts College International (SACI) in 2015. She has exhibited around Europe and the United States with a focus on interdisciplinary approach and site-specific installation.
