ARTS(s)300i Beginning Serigraphy, Kathy Knippel, Spring 2017

THE COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTION TO VARIOUS TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSES INVOLVED IN SERIGRAPHY OR SILKSCREEN AS WELL AS A COURSE IN PRINTMAKING OR TEXTILE SURFACE DESIGN.

The course will have two options:
1. SERIGRAPHY, art prints on paper
2. TEXTILE PRINT DESIGN, surface design printing on fabrics.

The direction of Serigraphy should be chosen by graphic design, painting, print majors, and photo majors. Textile Print Design should be chosen by all Surface Design majors, Textile and Fashion Design majors. Though the general process will be very similar, the projects will be different, along with varying techniques required 0f the particular projects. The course covers introduction to history, numerous early and simple stencil making processes, with the emphasis on photographic emulsion techniques, which is covered in depth. Stencil techniques will cover both hand drawn, painted, or cut transparencies, use of photocopies, computer printouts, photos from litho film, etc. With the computer, designs can be worked with Photoshop in posterization, color separation, pixels, positive/negative, etc. Instruction will cover, stencil making, exercises in creating repeat patterns, darkroom procedures, color use, ink mixing, registration for paper printing and for textile printing of yardage, printing techniques, cleaning and recuperation of the screens.

Graduate Students
​Students in MFA, MA, and Post-Bac programs are expected to complete additional assignments and to produce work at a level appropriate for students in a graduate program. They are graded accordingly and, if they successfully complete all course requirements for graduate students, receive graduate-level credit for the course.

Materials

There is a studio fee of 100 Euro. To cover all inks, transparent, opaque and metallic. Also photo emulsion, other chemicals, tape, acetate, for transparencies, tracing paper and course related photocopies. Use of the silkscreen frames and squeeges and the wear and consumption on the silkscreen nylons and other equipment.

Materials to Purchase
- Personal drawing supplies, including a black china ink pen (penna di inchiostro) point .4 or.5
- Printing paper which will mostly be etching paper (carta per incisione)
- Fabric for those doing textile printing.
- Portfolio (cartella) of 50 x 75 cm in which to place designs and prints for classroom storage

Description of Course Contents

PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS: OPTION 1: PRINTS ON PAPER, SERIGRAPHY
Discussion and showing of many examples of prints and how they were achieved. Studio orientation of equipment.

EXERCISE 1: Techniques for cleaning and recuperating photo emulsion off used screens for reuse.
EXERCISE 2: Simple paper cut stencil exercise.

PROJECT 1: 4 COLOR DESIGN IN A GRAPHIC APPROACH
A theme or subject may be assigned. At least 4 design proposals will be presented for the selection on consultation with instructor. After design is selected, techniques will be explained and demonstrated for hand drawn, inked and painted, transparencies on acetate. Then darkroom techniques will be covered; coating, drying, exposing, and developing the screens. Following screen preparation, techniques cover ink mixing, preparing paper and print table, and printing and registration techniques, edition procedures. This project will require the printing of two sets of prints in differing color schemes.

PROJECT 2: 8 COLOR DESIGN IN A PAINTERLY MANNER
At least 4 design proposals will be presented for selection. After design ss chosen, additional possible techniques will be added for preparing the mainly hand drawn transparencies on acetate as well as help and advice on developing a painterly effect with layering and use of color and light and shading effects.. The procedures for the darkroom exposure and printing process will be as the first project, with further development skills.

PROJECT 3: USE OF PHOTOGRAPHS
This project must use a photograph (student’s own photo) for the main image although there can be added elements for drawing, collage, text, or other manipulation of the image. The photo can be prepared in the darkroom with litho film in posterization, with photocopies, or with the computer, using the Photoshop program with its many possibilities. The photo can be posterized, high contrast, color separation, CYMK, positive/negative, repeats, scale variation, collaged with other images, etc.

PROJECT 4: FREE CHOICE FROM THE FOLLOWING POSSIBILITIES
1. Print on other surfaces: canvas, wood, plexiglass, cardboard, etc.
2. Textile print in repeat or other textile use idea.
3. Print for book art project, to be bound into handmade book
4. Other traditional stencils: direct blockout, amberlith stencils.

NOTEBOOK
All notes on techniques, processes should be included as well as using it as a design inspiration book for future projects.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS: OPTION 2: TEXTILE PRINT DESIGN
Discussion and showing of many examples of textile prints and how they were achieved. Studio orientation of equipment.

EXERCISE 1: Techniques for designing repeat patterns, block repeat, brick repeat, half drop repeat, creating 3 to 6 pencil drawn repeats in each of the three styles. From this group, one will be selected for further development to be used for the first project. A theme or subject may be assigned for the designs.
EXERCISE 2: Screen preparation, Learn the process for removing photo emulsion from used screens.
EXERCISE 3: Simple cut paper exercise..

PROJECT 1: 2 COLOR TEXTILE REPEAT
Using a design selected from the repeat pattern exercise, the design will be prepared on two acetates for a two color textile print. Help will be given in developing the module for the repeat and techniques for rendering a hand drawn transparency.

Once the design is prepared darkroom techniques will be covered, coating, drying exposing and developing the screens.

The next step of printing covers ink mixing, preparing fabrics on the print tables and registration and printing techniques.

PROJECT 2: 4 COLOR TEX1TLE REPEAT IN BRICK OR HALF DROP REPEAT
A continuation of the skills learned in the first project, this time with more colors, some overlapping, and the addition of some texture in the design. A theme or subject may be assigned.

PROJECT 3: STRIPE, BORDER, OR CORNER SCARVE DESIGN
A textile repeat with different design considerations. In tow or more colors.

NOTEBOOK:
lncludes all repeat exercises done during the semester. Assignments will be given to draw at least three designs in repeat on a theme that will be given each week. Many of the themes will involve using decorative motifs observed in Florence and on school trips. Besides the assignments, the student should use the notebook as a design inspiration book with clippings, cards, photos, sketches, for developing future ideas. Notes on techniques and process are to be included.

JAN. 9-12
Introduction to class. Go over course description. Tour of studio and equipment. Go over examples with explanations. Start working on first designs for 4 color drawn design. Designing help. Demonstration on cleaning screens for the first project.              

Week 2

JAN. 16-19
Continue designing for first project. Individual cleaning of screens for the first project with close help. Approval of design proposal and start preparations of transparencies for photo emulsion transfer.

Week 3

JAN. 23-26
Continue preparations for first project. Second class, demonstration on Darkroom techniques. Coating screens, drying and exposure of screens.

Week 4

JAN 30-FEB. 2
Continue with darkroom processes, coating, drying and exposure of screens.  Second class ink mixing demonstration.

Week 5

FEB 6-9
DEMO  printing techniques for paper/registration. Printing techniques for printing a length of textile fabrics.

Week 6

FEB. 13 -16
Continue printing first project.  Second class if ready, class critique on the first project.

Week 7

FEB. 20-23
Introduction to second project requirements. 8 color painterly print, with looking at examples. 4 colors if project is textile.  Start designing and preparing new project.

 

 

Week 8

MIDTERM BREAK (February 25- March 5)

Week 9

MAR. 6-9
Work on second project.  Darkroom work and printing.

Week 10

MAR. 13-16
Finish printing on second project.  Second class start with class critique on 2nd project. After critique, introduction of 3rd project. Photo image project. Looking at and explaining process with some examples. Start planning.   Textile project is rotating scarf or tile design.

Week 11

MAR. 20-23
Working on third Photo image project or   rotating textile design.

Week 12

MAR. 27-30
Working on third Photo image project or rotating textile design. Class critique on 3rd project.

Week 13

APRIL 3-6
Working on free choice project.

Week 14

APRIL 10-13
Working on free choice project. FINISHING all projects.

Week 15

APRIL 17- 20
Monday April 17 is a EASTER HOLIDAY.   Student art exhibit in the studio on Wednesday April 19th. Final individual critiques.
